What's good about it?◾Thought-provoking subtext involving unethical and immoral religious practices
◾Thoroughly developed plot experienced at a pace conducive to the events of the story
◾Very unique ideas that completely evade the "reused" or "rehashed" feel that other stories tend to harbor through regurgitation
◾Satirical voice ensures to keep the reader enthralled and provides a very particular set of perceptions in each scene; you probably haven't read anything akin to this narrator's voice before!
◾Interesting subject matter keeps the reader interested throughout, and it is sure to grab the attention of anyone who has ever been in that particular brand of social institution
◾Novella format--can be read entirely in one or two sittings
◾Great choice of setting: Costa Rica with a coinciding successful execution of imagery
◾Well-organized syntax: reading is smooth and well-worded, avoiding cliché terms and overused idioms; fresh.
◾Excellent set-up and delivery of comic relief in key places

Easy enough to read in just one sitting and provoking enough to require one to finish, Gringo Parade by Jonathan Ojanpera is quite the story. Young adult protagonist Nick, also recreational drug user, engages himself on a mission trip to Costa Rica with a group of Pentecostal Christians from the Deep South. On the trip he will find himself in many precarious situations, each of which serve to drive another nail in the coffin of his belief in the waning aptitude and competence of the religious sect. Rife with violative incidents and disconcertment for a person's right not to "fit the mold," Nick is eventually led to a conclusion that sides him more and more with the poor Costa Ricans than with, if you would, the rich American religious bigots.
This little novella packs a good punch for its size. While the protagonist hardly speaks Spanish, he is very fluent in cynicism, a wonderful peculiarity that really sets the stage for everything he will experience throughout. Even if you just wanted a good laugh, you'll find Gringo Parade a delightful read. Moments of incredulity liter the ground like confetti, displaying both the hilarious side and the alarming side that exhale from the same breath of each circumstance.
I recommend this book to anyone, but especially to those who have been affiliated with any religious institution in which "outsiders" were held in a separate light from "insiders." The light cast by Ojanpera leaves nothing to be desired; every character has its places, and no time or thoughts are spared to those of whom no significance is required. Such magnification allows us to feel from the recipient's perspective the unsettling aggravation toward those really responsible for calling the shots and actions of the sheep fold, ensuring that each character receives the appropriate level of ignominy from his or her sin.

From the moment I picked up the book, I literally did not put it down until I closed the back cover. I found myself completely absorbed in the entire experience, from empathetic connections to the characters to being able to ‘see’ in my mind’s eye the sights of world’s I have yet to experience personally. I must say that one day I look forward to enjoying Costa Rican coffee “as black as smut” and learning about the “Tao of banana trees”. By the time I finished this tale, I felt I had actually been a part of the journey and that the journey is now a part of my memory.
This is well worth the investment of time and money for you to get your copy of Gringo Parade and you might want to visit the website of the author[...] where there is no passport required for this journey, only the desire to enjoy the trip.
